Jagannath University students stage demonstration against sexual harassment

Authorities at Jagannath University have imposed sanctions on two instructors in the department of cinema and television after a female student accused them of sexual harassment. Abu Shahed Emon, the teacher in question, has been placed on temporary leave while an investigation is conducted. The girl said that she was tormented by the teacher and that as a result, she didn't pass the tests. In view of the accusations, the chairman of the department has also been removed from office. The choice was taken at an urgent Jagannath University syndicate meeting in response to harsh criticism of the student's allegations. Ainul Islam, the acting registrar, gave Prothom Alo confirmation of the acts.

Following their decision, the university syndicate chose to dismiss the chairman of the department and suspend Shahed Emon. Following the tragic suicide of JnU student Fairuz Sadaf Abantika, who had accused a classmate and an assistant proctor of mental torture prior to her death, the female student spoke out about harassment. The female student from the department of cinema and television went to the police Detective Branch (DB) on Monday and asked for protection for her safety. She also wrote to the university's chancellor, President Mohammed Shahabuddin, pleading for the creation of a special committee to look into the incident and hold the university responsible. The student and the two teachers were called by the DB to their headquarters on Mintoo Road in Dhaka on Wednesday.
